Lotteries in History

The ancient Romans were the first to use lotteries. At circuses, emperors threw numbered pieces of parchment into the arena. Those who grabbed them presented the 'winning' numbers to claim prizes, either privileges or goods such as precious vases or horses. Augustus sold articles, by lot, to guests at his banquets and organized the selling of tickets at festivals with prizes that ranged in value from toothpicks to 100 gold pieces. Nero was more extravagant, using lotteries to dispose of gold, jewelry, villas at Capri and batches of slaves brought to rebuild his city after it had burned to the ground. Roman nobles also conducted sweepstakes at dinner parties.

New York Lottery Probabilities

Player’s Probability

The factor, besides odds is a player’s probability of winning, New York Lottery. Say, if a 50 number lottery ticket has a chance of 1 in 50 then the chances of predicting the digit of the ball announced that means, there are 50 different options of choosing that first number. For the other numbers called out there are only 1 in 49, 1 in 48, 1 in 47, etc, chances of predicting the other numbers correctly.
Mathematically, this means each of the 50 ways of choosing the first number creates 49 different options of selecting the second. The rule for predicting the odds of picking just the two is calculated as - 50 x 49. For the third number, there are only 48 ways of selecting the number; so the Probability of correctly predicting three numbers drawn from 50 is calculated as 50 x 49 x 48. The calculation becomes astronomical as it goes on until the sixth number has been drawn creating a final calculation: 50 x 49 x 48 x 47 x 46 x 45 which is11441304000.

Odds of Winning

However, if there is a catch in the equation, such as the condition that the numbers should match the sequence in which they are drawn (as most 50 number lotteries that asks a player to choose six numbers) these numbers must match, no matter what sequence they come out. Moreover, given any set of 7 numbers, there are 7x6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5040 options the numbers could be drawn. Dividing 11441304000 by 5040 equals 2270100 the usual odds of winning a 7/50 New York State Lottery .

Power Ball

Of course, the chances of winning any specific lottery may vary depending on the lottery’s composition. Power ball, a multistage lottery in the United States union with huge jackpots, is a lottery, which is even harder to win than usual. The odds of winning Power-ball are one in 146,107,962. This is because Power-ball players pick six numbers, from two different sets of numbers. The first five numbers come from the first set (a set of numbers on the ticket) that contains numbers from 1 to 55. The sixth number, the Power-ball number, comes in the second set of numbers on the lottery ticket, which consists of numbers from 1 to 42. To win, a lottery player's five consecutive or standard numbers must tally the five regular numbers drawn. The Power-ball number must tally the Power-ball number. This makes the chances of winning a Power-ball lottery 5 times less likely than 6/49.
